A grocery delivery app for a beloved household name.

SPAR is a proudly South African grocery brand, with community-owned-and-operated stores, offering product lines that are local and lekker.

SPAR group approached us to create an updated grocery delivery app with an improved user experience. We partnered with their marketing agency, Hunt-Lascaris TBWA, who provided imagery, copy, & branding elements, for our digital product design.

Challenge

As e-commerce becomes increasingly convenient, retailers have the opportunity to reach more customers than ever before. In order to win more market-share by competing head-on with other offerings, we differentiated the SPAR2U mobile app by making it exceedingly human-centred.

We achieved this through extensive user experience research that revealed the pain-points, causes of friction, and areas for improvement in typical designs, as well as opportunities for delight.

Integration with SPAR Rewards was a must.

Solution

To ensure that the app was human-centred, we conducted a full friction audit of the BETA app release and two design sprints. The resulting final prototype met and exceeded the expectations of SPAR’s grocery delivery customer base.

We then developed a more functional, robust, and effective mobile application using React Native, which integrated with a headless back-end e-commerce ‘engine’ via API calls.

Impact

We created the new SPAR2U App in 8 months and launched in 100 stores with a 4.5 star rating on the iOS store in the first month.
