Find out what’s draining your engineering team

Do you really know what takes up the most time and energy in your team’s day-to-day work? Without true visibility of the daily challenges faced by engineering teams, efficiency is an impossible feat in the world of software development.  But increased efficiency is exactly what’s expected from an industry so heavily impacted by AI.

Challenge

When engineering teams are juggling between multiple projects at once, context switching can create a lack of focus and lead to mistakes. It also becomes difficult to understand where most of the team’s effort is actually going. Is more time spent fixing bugs than on new product features? Is one engineer swamped with tasks while their colleague has hours of time on their hands?

More projects lead to added pressure, which is usually when best practices take a backseat in any industry, including engineering. Pull requests build up, bottlenecks are created and a series of minor oversights can quickly become a major business problem.

A holistic view of all people and the projects they work on is essential in ensuring the team’s efforts are aligned with the goals of the business.

Encora Focus Areas

Encora is built by developers for developers, considering language and flows that works naturally for them.

Solution

Encora was developed by PlusNarrative as a tool for transparency and total visibility of the engineering team’s day-to-day work. While other engineering management platforms offer a meaningless data dump, Encora presents the data in a way that helps CTOs and team leads make sense of the information they see, using language and jargon that makes sense to engineers.

Encora offers insights in three unique ways:

1.     It tells you what to do

Offering more than just a dashboard of problems the tool has identified, Encora uses AI to suggest a concrete next step to solve each problem. Each data point comes with a conversationally structured overview that makes it easy to action next steps.

2.     It names the drains

It’s one thing knowing that work has stalled, but it’s more important to know why. Encora assigns unique scores to the six specific forces known to drain engineering teams: delays, relearning, abandoned work, interruptions, needless features and slip-ups. Alerts are sent via instant messaging directly to the platforms teams usually use for communication, like Slack.

3.     It remembers the humans behind the work

Your team won’t always tell you when they’re overworked or struggling with tasks. This is important information that impacts the wellbeing of your engineers as well as the health of the projects they work on. Encora watches for patterns that lead to burn-out, including late night commits, narrowing review circles and lone-wolf repos.

Encora is built on the basis that wellbeing isn’t a perk, it’s the foundation that everything else stands on.

Impact

Designed for engineers first, Encora has successfully improved visibility of the projects and the wellbeing of the people who work on them across our distributed team.

A holistic view of all projects has enabled product owners to distribute and reassign tasks more efficiently, preventing bottlenecks. Automated alerts and reminders empower engineers to stay on top of their own work and adhere to best practices.  Team meetings and feedback are based on data, giving visibility to issues that may previously have been brushed over.

Today, the engineering team has clarity of exactly where their effort is going and team leads can easily see how well aligned those efforts are with business goals.
